Social Security Scam

Sugarcreek Borough Police would like to notify residents that with tax season coming upon us there will likely be an increase in scam and fraud calls.

Sugarcreek Police would like to remind residents that the Social Security Administration (SSA) does not contact individuals via phone or email. SSA does not accept gift cards, Apple Pay, I-Tunes gift cards, or gift cards as methods of payment. This is a sure sign of a scam.

SSA contacts individuals via certified mail.

If you receive a scam phone call or email; SSA has released a website so that you can report the attempted scam/fraud quickly. The website is:

OIG.SSA.GOV

If you believe that someone is or has tried to scam you regarding your social security number, you are urged to report the contact by using the website listed above.

Please remember to guard you personal information and do not give it out to someone you cannot verify.
