Phone Scam

Sugarcreek Police was advised by a Borough resident that she had received a phone call from an unknown male stating that he was from the Social Security Administration. This person advised the victim that she needed to go to her bank and withdraw all her money and she was to go to Walmart and by gift cards. During this scam the victim was told to stay on her phone the whole time while she was to go to the bank.

The phone number that called the victim was a number used by Franklin Police Department. The caller stated that the victim had a warrant for her arrest because her social security number was used by another person who had killed a person and the only way to clear this up was to pay with gift cards.

Sugarcreek Police is asking residences to be careful with phone calls asking for you to buy gift cards. If you are not sure of the caller being legit then ask for a call back number for you to call them back. Also the Social Security Administration Office will not call you for any money owed.

Franklin Police Department was notified of their phone number being spoofed.
