The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania DUI Association, and law enforcement agencies across western Pennsylvania will team up this weekend to kick off the Halloween Impaired Driving Campaign, running from October 11 through October 31.<\/p>\n
An enforcement initiative, named \u201cOperation Ghoul Busters,\u201d was formally announced today during media events at the Erie County Courthouse and the Hermitage Police Department in Mercer County.<\/p>\n
\u201cImpaired driving remains an all-too-common problem on our roadways, and we need to do everything we can to combat it,\u201d said Maggie Nunley, a Regional Program Administrator for the Pennsylvania DUI Association<\/strong>. \u201cOur hope is to use this joint enforcement period as an opportunity to remind motorists of the importance of sober driving and ultimately save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n The coordinated enforcement activities, which will take place between Friday, October 11, 2024, and Sunday, October 13, 2024, will include roving DUI patrols. Local and state law enforcement agencies will also conduct sustained enforcement activities across the Commonwealth throughout the entire Halloween Impaired Driving Campaign to deter drivers from getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.<\/p>\n The Hermitage Police Department and the Erie County District Attorney\u2019s Office will spearhead the \u201cOperation Ghoul Busters\u201d enforcement in the northwest region as grantees of PennDOT\u2019s Municipal Police Traffic Services Enforcement Program.<\/p>\n The enforcement is part of PennDOT and its safety partners\u2019 continued efforts to reduce the number of impaired driving crashes, injuries, and fatalities statewide.<\/p>\n A multi-faceted approach is used to help keep Pennsylvania\u2019s roadways safe including educating the public on the state\u2019s vehicle code, DUI laws and the dangers and consequences of impaired driving.<\/p>\n The operation is funded in part by PennDOT\u2019s statewide distribution of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).<\/p>\n
