Scam Alert

The Sugarcreek Borough Police have learned of a new scam that is affecting residents: The new scam is currently being referred to a “Brushing”

A package is sent to a residence that contain items that the person did not order. When the person opens the box, they will see the packing slip that will have the “Information” on how to return the items if they were shipped to them by mistake.

The letter will seem official and appear to be from a legitimate shipping company. The letter usually contains a QR code or a link with a statement that has the resident scan the latter with their phone to read to QR code on the link on the letter.

This QR code and link will then allow the person who sent the letter to download and gather all the information off the victim’s phone. The includes all personal and banking data.

The victim(s) then become the victim on financial fraud.

If you receive a package that you or others of the household members did not order, or was shipped to you by another person (friend or family) contact the shipper either by phone or by going to their actual website. Do not use any of the information provided on the letter or paperwork provided in the package.
